Including local knowledge in coastal policy innovation: comparing three Dutch case studies

In the context of a growing emphasis on research and application citizen engagement methods in environmental planning management (e.g. Reed 2008; Von Korff et al. 2010), we compare three collaborative activities aimed at finding innovative coastal policy solutions Netherlands. these activities, participants across citizen, science divide were involved designing nature-based interventions for specific areas The are compared terms theoretical promise stakeholder holds influencing participants’ understanding respective bio-geophysical systems, actor networks effecting knowledge sharing. We find local offers potential crafting to fit societal context. empirical analysis revealed deep competence people, who generally understand their lived environment systemic way, that can be harvested broaden enrich design space – addition willingness part stakeholders collaborate developing sustainable futures. Although measures reduce power differences enable inclusion served our case studies, they also constrained scientific technical quality contributions from professional experts such as scientists, engineers, spatial planners analysts. As such, future work addressing dilemma integrating high inputs into founded expertise is advocated.
